Description

THIS is a remarkable, new cost and time-saving device is called the DC-Hub. Imagine a simple, extremely robust DC input/output fuse box combination board that reduces workshop time by a large factor, but also does away with the need for specialist expertise when building DC electric setups.

All components are wired to this single central hub, including AC chargers, solar panels and DC-chargers. From the same unit are wires run to all accessories, such as fridges, lights, compressors and more. This can all be done without the need of crimps, lugs, shrinks or expertise. All the time-consuming works is done for you!

It connects all elements of a DC installation, including first battery, auxiliary batteries, DC-DC, alternator, solar, DC-DC and other charging devices.

The highest quality connectors mean that soldered or crimped lugs, as well as heat-shrink is unnecessary.

This reduces labour time and the need for expertise and speeds up fault finding and warranty comebacks.

With the DC-Hub there is no need for the following items:

  • Crimps and lugs
  • Fuse box
  • Heat shrink
  • Optional cradle (mount bracket) available

  • Lower voltage drops means improved equipment efficiency.
  • Adding additional accessories made far easier, simpler and saves time
  • Does not rely on external communications or devices to use or maintain.
  • Extremely robust and reliable.
  • Suitable for any house (aux) battery bank size.
  • Suitable for 12V or 24V applications.

FOOL PROOF

One of the biggest challenges of electrical installations is the lack of expertise, and the resultant quality shortfalls. With the Egon DC-Hub, there are no need for lugs. No need for heat shrinks. No need for lots of experience. Simply strip the wires, and insert.

NO ELECTRONICS

Because sometimes, analogue is just easier and more reliable, and can be set-up by anyone, anywhere.

TESTED TO DESTRUCTION

We proved that our goal to over-engineer the DC-Hub worked, putting massive current over-loads through the connections and PC board, over extended time periods, resulted in no warping, melting or any significant damage of any kind. We abused it beyond anything that could happen in the real world, and it came back smiling. And amazingly, even though we tested one to destruction - it still works faultlessly. We could not destroy it!

Fuses

The DC Hub does not come with any fuses, but we have a few kit options

CONNECTOR EXPLANATION

The house (aux) battery (AGM, LiFePO4, flooded Lead Acid, etc…) connects to connector P3 and needs an external 150A fuse at the house battery bank. Any size battery bank can be used. The DC-Hub is not limited to a certain Amp Hour size.

The start battery gets connected to connector P8 and needs an external fuse at the start battery of your vehicle. Solar panels can be connected to connector P7. Both connectors P8 & P7 positive cables are linked to connector P6 to simplify the connection to a DC/DC charger with integrated MPPT controller. All ground connections of every single connector are linked on the circuit board. A DC/DC charger with integrated MPPT controller (Redarc BCDC range, Enerdrive DC/DC, etc…) can be connected to connector P5 with charge output and ground and to connector P6 for solar and start battery input. All loads (like compressors, fridges, lights, charge ports, etc…) can now be connected to the remaining connectors and will be automatically connected to the house battery.

ATTENTION:

Connectors P4 & P5 can handle a constant 80A load. To prevent the Maxi Fuses from overheating please use 2 Maxi Fuses.

Example: When connecting a DC/DC charger to connector P5 that requires a 60A fuse insert 2 x 30A fuses into fuse holder F13 & F13A. Do the same with connections to connector P4 and use the fuse holder F14 & F14A. Connectors P9 & P10 can only handle 40A constant load or 80A intermittent load. Currents of 40A must not be exceeded for more than 10 minutes at a duty cycle of 50% (10 minutes on / 10 minutes off) to allow the contacts to cool.

DC- Hub Bracket

This EGON DC HUB COMBO KIT also comes with a specifically designed DC BRACKET AND COVER to mount the EGON DC-Hub.

It consists of a stainless-steel mounting bracket combined with a see-through high-quality hard plastic cover.

The easily removed cover lets you see everything going on behind it, for example a blown fuse.

The mounting bracket is designed to permit ease of mounting in any choice of direction and includes multiple anchor points that permit cable ties to fix each cable.

The bracket contains holes on one side for cable ties to reduce vibration and a clear front to see everything going on.

It has multiple, conveniently placed mounting holes that means a quick and easy installation.

The Dimensions of the bracket are: 320mm(W) x 160mm(D) x 70mm(H)

Attention:

  • fuses are meant to fit tightly in the sockets on the DC-Hub Board
  • do not attempt to pry open the receiving sockets to make fuses easier to remove or be reduced
  • the tight nature of the fuse in their holders insures minimal voltage-drop
  • if they become loose-fitting, the connection may heat up and voltage drop and efficiency will be reduced
  • if you find a fuse that is not tight in its holder, we recommend using pliers, gently squeezing the connector before inserting the fuse.
  • Pay special attention to th DCDC charger connection fuse (P5)

Tightening Torque Settings & Connector Maintenance

It is extremely important to tighten the screw terminals on the DC Hub connectors properly. Please use the following torque settings to tighten the connectors:

  • 150A connector: 3.5Nm
  • 80A / 40A connectors: 1.5Nm
  • 25A connectors: 0.6Nm

Ensure all unused clamps are tightened to prevent rattling from the circuit board. In high-vibration applications make sure you check the screw tensions as part of your regular vehicle maintenance schedule.

Cable Ratings and Fuses

The following chart can be used as a guideline for picking the right cable size for your application. We also integrated a guide for picking the right lug and heat shrink size. Never exceed the amp rating for a cable. Always use a fuse that is smaller or equal to the maximum current carrying capability of the cable that you are using. Never exceed the manufacturers recommend fuse rating for the appliance you are connecting.

FAQ

What is the difference between the EGON DC-Hub and Redarc’s Red Vision System?

There are several differences between these two products. The main one being the simplicity of the DC-Hub, which stays away from the technology of screens and phones, etc simplifying the product immensely. The Red Vision has many integrated features including water level monitoring, temperatures, etc.

The installation of the Red vision includes running multiple cables and requires lugs, crimps, and shrink cable; whereas the DC-Hub doesn’t. All cables go to a single point and no other bits and pieces are required.

The Red Vision has a max of 80A where the DC-Hub has a max of 150A

For more information about the comparison of these products, check out the youtube video EGON created for it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1KUqof7JJ4

How foolproof is it?

The EGON DC-Hub is so simply designed that almost anyone with basic electrical knowledge can easily install. The worst thing that could go wrong is that a fuse blows, but you will always be aware if that happens when the corresponding LED goes on.

If you set your DC-Hub up with the correct cable thickness and fuse rating, blown fuses shouldn’t be a problem. We have wiring instructions available on our youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdilxfQOXhs&t=4s) and documents explaining Wiring.

What is the max Ah ( Amp Hour) rating the DC Hub can handle?

While the max Amp Rating for the start battery input is 60A through a DC/DC charger or Smart Solenoid, the Ah isn't the same. As long as the fuse ratings on the circuit board are not exceeded the DC Hub is compatible with any size battery bank on the start battery side or house / accessory battery side. It is important to note that Ah and A are two different things:

Ah = The capacity of a battery (as in how much energy is in the battery).

A = The amount of current running through an electrical conductor.
